The Medical Laboratory Technician performs clinical laboratory testing and assists in promoting a quality of service based on accuracy and timeliness in reporting results. Under general supervision the Medical Laboratory Technicians are responsible for assisting the department manager in the effective operation of the laboratory through the coordination of all activities in their respective responsibilities.

  • Maintains education requirements as outlined in 2005 ASCP requirements (36 hours CD during a 3 year period)
  • Demonstrates competency as a laboratory generalist in all areas of core lab
  • Serves as a resource for MLT I and Clinical Lab Assistants
  • Processes all applicable specimens in the laboratory
  • Performs tests following established department policies and procedures exercising independent judgment when necessary
  • Reports tests results in writing or by computer conforming to establish policies and procedures
  • Operates monitors and maintains laboratory equipment according to established policies and procedures
  • Performs and documents defined quality control procedures required for tests assayed
  • Follows established procedures for the environment of care and laboratory safety
  • Makes judicious use of time, supplies equipment and resources
  • Utilizes time management skills to complete work
  • Recognizes own limitations and seeks assistance as needed
  • Utilizes appropriate chain of command
  • Utilizes courtesy and sensitivity, demonstrates effective and respectful communication
  • Cooperates in staffing and scheduling requirements to meet the needs of the department
  • Participates as team member by assisting others with patient care needs, department activities, etc.
  • Supports  a culture of patient and staff safety
  • Performs other duties as assigned



  • Associate's Degree in Laboratory Technology
  • 1 year experience preferred

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:

  • ASCP Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician
